Methods: We conducted a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies capturing experiences of loneliness among young people with depression. Meta-synthesis has been described as the qualitative equivalent to metaanalysis. In meta- - synthesis the generic term ‘meta’ refers to the translation of studies into one another. There are a number of approaches[36-41] most of which originate from Noblit and Hare’s[42] development of metaethnography. Findings: Meta-synthesis attempts to integrate results from a number of different but inter-related qualitative studies. The technique has an interpretive, rather than aggregating, intent, in contrast to meta-analysis of quantitative studies.

WHAT IS META-SYNTHESIS? •Interpretive analytical technique that uses the qualitative findings reported in previous studies as building blocks for gaining a deeper understanding of particular phenomena •Types of findings that can be analysed include: – Interpreted data – Unanalysed quotes – Field notes – Documents – Etc. Systematic reviews of published qualitative research have emerged as an important set of methods to aggregate, summarize, analyze, and synthesize qualitative data from a variety of study designs. These approaches include meta-study, meta-summary, grounded formal theory, meta-ethnography, and qualitative meta-synthesis. In this workshop, we will when conducting a qualitative meta-synthesis: (1) theory building; (2) theory explication; and (3) theory development. It is illuminating, and a holistic view of the phenomena results from the synthesis of qualitative findings from numerous studies. The meta-synthesis approach has been determined to be an appropriate The quantitative evidence was synthesised using network meta-analyses (NMAs).

Although systematic reviews of quantitative data are well established, for qualitative research, this is a fairly new field, and methods are still developing. An alternative is a formal synthesis of the qualitative results. A few years after quantitative meta-analysis was established as a method in social science re-search, a corresponding method was introduced for qualitative synthesis. The founders, Noblit and Hare, called this method of synthesis meta-ethnography. Quantitative versus qualitative synthesis • In many (Cochrane) Reviews Data Synthesis part is missing • Data-synthesis / Meta-analysis – Pros • answer to review research question • more precise answer (smaller 95% Confidence Interval) • increased power • allows subgroup analysis – Cons • risk of combining apples and pears 1996-11-01 · The practical importance of interpretive meta-synthesis is highlighted in relation to theory development.
